Aga Khan Award for Architecture

The Aga Khan Award for Architecture was established by His Highness the Aga Khan in 1977 to identify and encourage building concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of communities in which Muslims have a significant presence. Every three years, it awards one million dollars in prizes.
The Award’s mandate is different from that of many other architecture prizes in that it selects projects that not only exhibit architectural excellence but also improve the overall quality of life. Since its launch 36 years ago, 11 cycles have taken place. More than a hundred projects have received the
Award and more than 7500 projects have been documented.

The winners of the Award are selected by an independent Master Jury, appointed by the Steering Committee, for each triennial cycle.
The Award ceremonies have taken place at important historical sites, such as the Shalimar Gardens in Lahore, the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, the Badi’ Palace in Marrakesh, the Citadel in Cairo, the Alhambra in Granada, and the Gardens of Emperor Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi, among others. The
12th cycle ceremony will take place at the Castle of São Jorge in Lisbon in September 2013.

On the occasion of each ceremony, a specially designed postal stamp featuring the venue where the ceremony is held has been issued by the host government. This stamp is the 12th in this series of commemorations to the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

The Award is a programme of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, one of the 11 development agencies which constitute the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). The AKDN is an institution, chaired by His Highness the Aga Khan, which aims to improve the quality of life in some thirty countries around the globe.
